Self-reflection helps to capture learnings & insights and with practice, can help us respond and create more positive future outcomes. Self-reflection gives us a break from the particulars, and the focus to sort through experiences with quality attention, to capture insights, consider other viewpoints, and learn from the experience. These learnings turn into knowledge, which can then be applied to our future experiences. We can consciously practice desirable mindsets (growth), actions and outcomes. These insights are fundamental to our lifelong learning journey.
Want to try?
Step 1. Create the proper setting for your reflection, both mental and physical - a quiet space is pref.
Step 2. Do a check-in with yourself. How do I feel? How is it going? What’s on my mind? Be aware of your surroundings, get present in this moment. Decide what to reflect on (e.g. situation, feelings, event).
Step 3. Want to capture your insights? You might want to write down insights on paper, free of device distractions.
• What happened?
• How do I feel?
• What was my reaction?
• What insights do I have from the experience?
• How do I choose to respond next time?
• Any action to take?
Step 4. If appropriate, set deadlines for the actions. Share with a buddy if you want support for completion.
Step 5. Debrief with yourself.
• One thing I can I improve is...
• One thing I did well is...
• I’d like to celebrate here & now by.... (e.g. applaud myself for my learnings, do a silly dance, smile a HUGE smile... whatever it is, deliberately choose something to celebrate your learning in the moment).
Self-reflection helps with self-awareness, which is key to emotional intelligence. Reflection is a key to personal growth. If you want to grow and be a more effective leader, taking the time to get to know yourself will foster your ability to understand others better.
